Petroleum AdditivesSodium formate CAS#141-53-7
Physical properties:
Appearance: White granules or crystalline powder at room temperature. If it contains crystal water, it is a white crystalline solid.
Odor: Slight formic acid odor.
Solubility: Easily soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and octanol, insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline.
Density: Relative density is 1.92g/cm³.
Melting point: ≥253℃.
Boiling point: 360℃.
Chemical properties:
It is deliquescent and hygroscopic.
Decomposition may occur when it encounters acid or under heating conditions. Pure sodium formate melts at 253℃ and slowly decomposes into sodium carbonate, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and a small amount of sodium oxalate at around 330℃; a violent exothermic reaction occurs above 400℃, and sodium formate is dehydrogenated and converted into sodium oxalate.
