Methacrylic acid, abbreviated MAA, is an natural compound. This colourless, viscous liquid is a carboxylic acid with an acrid disagreeable odor. It is soluble in heat water and miscible with most natural solvents. Methacrylic acid is produced industrially on a giant scale as a precursor to its esters, specially methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The methacrylates have severa uses, most fantastically in the manufacture of polymers with change names such as Lucite and Plexiglas. MAA happens naturally in small quantities in the oil of Roman chamomile.
