5-Amino-o-cresol is used as an oxidizing dye coupling agent in the manufacture of cosmetics hair dyes. According to the data of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the annual production of 5-amino-o-cresol is 10000 to 100000 pounds.

5-Amino-o-cresol is a compound used as aminophenol in analytical chemistry. It reacts with ethylenediamine to form a red dye called 5-aminonaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid (5ANDS). The reaction solution can be used to identify the presence of bacterial DNA. 5-Amino-o-cresol has been proved to have genotoxic effects, which may lead to skin cancer or skin damage. This chemical also has toxicological properties and can cause skin irritation at high concentrations.
