It is mainly distributed in the low mountains and plains of Taiwan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou in China, but the wild distribution area in Taiwan can reach an altitude of about 1800m.
Growth habits: camphor trees like sunshine. But young trees need proper shade to grow well. The young trees begin to enjoy light when they grow to 2-3 m, and become more photogenic when they are young. It is suitable to grow in the area where the annual average temperature is 16~23 ℃, the absolute maximum temperature is 42 ℃, and the absolute minimum temperature is more than – 7 ℃. The average temperature in January is more than 5 ℃, and the annual precipitation is more than 800~1300mm, but it is most suitable to grow in a warm and humid climate. At seedling stage, the cold resistance is poor and vulnerable to freezing damage. The cold resistance of adult plants becomes stronger. Camphor trees can grow in acid to neutral soil, deep soil layer, fertile sandy loam, yellow soil, red and yellow soil, red soil and alluvial soil of light sandy loam. It is not resistant to drought and barren, but can withstand short-term flooding, and can grow in humid areas with high groundwater level. Camphor tree has developed crown, low branches and short trunk. When mixed with other trees, there are few lateral branches and the trunk is clear and straight. Deep rooted, with developed taproot, able to resist wind. There were fewer lateral fibrous roots at seedling stage, and the root regeneration was strong. After planting, the root system recovered quickly and developed into strong horizontal and vertical roots. Cinnamomum camphora has a medium growth rate, a fast young age, and a long life span of up to 1000 years.
